I had a great couple of weeks. I'd like to say I'd started another one today, but the truth is I slept through the only class and the gym's closed tomorrow. I also slept through all but about 2.5 hours of daylight, so, you know, getting up and going probably wasn't in the cards at all.

But! Great couple of weeks! I ran. Okay, on a purely physical level, this isn't that much of an accomplishment. I'm slow and heavy and my knees tend to complain the morning after I do any distance on concrete, but that doesn't prevent me from running. I can always go slower if faster isn't working. The problem is running in front of other people. (So to speak. I'm usually behind other people, if they're also running.) I sometimes get in a state where, well, I'm not really sure, but for some reason I'm convinced other people have an opinion on me running.

So the solution is to decide other people can go fuck themselves. I finally broke through that emotional barrier Friday before last. Fuck other people! And fuck rowing as a substitute! I ran for the workout, and I was the slowest one by a lap, and I found out that my mile time had improved by, like, five minutes. I can do a mile in under ten, which isn't impressive by any measure by mine, and I did it without even realizing. So go me! And go fuck other people! Yeah!

Also, I went up 4 inches on box jumps, to 12 inches. I think I could do 16, but again the issue there is less physical than psychological. It takes a long time to talk myself out of vertigo for the jumps. That gets easier as the workout goes on and I get too tired to care about falling.

And! I can clean 55, jerk 67, and not kill myself trying to power snatch. Small numbers, when the tiny women on either side of me are cleaning their bodyweight at speed, but big enough that I can write them down without wanting to give up.

Squat snatch: still the devil.

Cooking question. Two of my roommates have moved out and I've been in a territorial frenzy rearranging the kitchen to suit me -- the remaining roommate doesn't cook to speak of, so as long as her things are within reasonable reach, I'm free to do as I like without conflict. I've found a chunk of bottom round roast that's been sitting in the freezer since ... well, that's unimportant. It looks intact and I'm willing to take my chances. (Read: I'm cheap.) I'm thinking the crock pot and about ten hours is the answer, but wondering how to season it to minimize any taste of freezer burn. Soy sauce, garlic, onion, obviously. What else?

Smoked half-sharp Hungarian paprika, if you can get it. Or even smoked regular; it's just such a nice warming taste, and it covers freezer burn (or a lot of other things.)

Seconding paprika! I'd chuck a couple of onions in there, paprika, tomato paste and some red wine. What's left over makes a good pasta sauce.

Before you slow cook it, make a paste of cumin, black pepper, olive oil garlic and paprika, rub the meat, and let it sit overnight (this is why the good lord invented freezer-sized zip lock bags, JMO) in the fridge. That'll give it time to soften/flavor anything freezer burned on the surface. Save the soy and/or salt for the liquid portion of the cooking, unless you want to invest the time to brine it (which seems like a waste if you're going to slow cook).
